Join us at DESIGN TALK: MUJI for “The Antithesis of Consumerism and the Search for a Better Way of Living” as we welcome Masaaki Kanai, Chairman and Representative Director of Ryōhin Keikaku Co Ltd (the manufacturer and retailer of Mujirushi Ryōhin / MUJI), a brand of household and consumer goods that is unique in its commitment to design minimalism, focus on recycling, avoidance of waste in production and packaging, and its no-logo (“no brand”) policy.
About the Speakers
Born in 1957, Masaaki Kanai began his career at Ryōhin Keikaku Co Ltd, the manufacturer and retailer of Mujirushi Ryōhin (MUJI) in 1993 after working for Seiyu Stores, presently known as Seiyu GK. Contributing to the growth of Ryōhin Keikaku Co Ltd by leading the Household products division, the main sales pillar of the company, in the role of General Manager in Merchandising.
Since his career began at Seiyu GK, Kanai-san has been heavily involved in MUJI in the fields of Sales and Merchandising, and has also took on additional roles as President and Representative Director of IDEE Co Ltd, another company owned by Ryōhin Keikaku Co Ltd.
Scott Hawthorn is Vancouver based creative entrepreneur who is the founder and CEO of Native Shoes. Previously, Mr. Hawthorn worked for 10 years in Tokyo. Active in his community, Mr. Hawthorn is a founder and board member for Design Build Research Institute, a not-for-profit architectural design build school. He is a current Board member at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD).
